Offshore wind cable cleats are purchased as small components, but they sit on a high-risk path: power cables, salt exposure, vibration and short-circuit restraint. For exposed tower or transition-piece routes, SS316 trefoil cleats are usually selected when corrosion margin and documentation matter more than lowest unit price.

At a Glance

For offshore wind projects, specify SS316 trefoil cable cleats by cable OD, trefoil formation, peak short-circuit current, support spacing, mounting detail and corrosion class. The RFQ should also ask for IEC 61914 basis, A4 fasteners, liner material and project documents.

Best for
Offshore towers, transition pieces, J-tube areas and exposed cable routes where chloride corrosion and short-circuit restraint are both design risks.
Not suitable for
Dry indoor control cable routes or low-voltage auxiliary cables where a light clamp is enough.
Selection steps
1 — Confirm cable OD and trefoil bundle diameter -> 2 — obtain peak/RMS fault current -> 3 — define spacing and mounting surface -> 4 — choose SS316/316L body and A4 fasteners -> 5 — request drawings and inspection documents

§ 01 Why SS316 is specified offshore

The material choice is driven by chloride exposure, condensation and the cost of offshore replacement. SS316 or 316L provides better pitting resistance than 304 in marine atmospheres, especially where cable routes pass through transition pieces or splash-prone tower zones. For the complete product page, see the SS316 trefoil cable cleat specification.

§ 02 What the RFQ must include

A useful RFQ should not say only cable cleat. It should include cable outside diameter, trefoil arrangement, available support pitch, prospective short-circuit current, mounting channel or plate detail, and whether the cleat body, bolts and washers must all be stainless. Without these numbers, suppliers can only quote a generic body size.

§ 03 IEC 61914 and short-circuit duty

IEC 61914 is the key reference because the cleat is a restraint device, not just a cable holder. The selected cleat must be suitable for the calculated fault force at the planned support spacing. If the project does not provide fault current data, ask the electrical designer before buying a stainless body on appearance alone.

§ 04 Documents buyers should request

For wind projects, ask for a dimensioned drawing, material declaration, fastener grade statement, inspection report and any available IEC 61914 test basis. Offshore projects may also require EN 10204 3.1 material certificates or project-specific coating and corrosion statements.

§ 05 How to link it into the product decision

Use this page as the procurement checklist, then move to the SS316 trefoil cable cleat page for product-level information. If weight or cost becomes the main constraint, compare against aluminum trefoil cable cleats before final release.

RFQ fieldWhy it matters
Cable OD / bundle sizeControls the cleat body size and liner fit.
Short-circuit currentDefines IEC 61914 restraint duty.
Support spacingChanges force per cleat and installation quantity.
EnvironmentDrives SS316, aluminum, fastener and liner choices.
DocumentsPrevents rework during project approval and incoming inspection.

Evidence and decision boundary

Direct evidence
IEC 61914 requires configuration-specific cable-cleat testing. ISO 3506-1 defines stainless fastener properties and ISO 9227 defines a corrosion-test method; neither proves an untested SS316 cleat assembly suitable for offshore duty.
Engineering inference
Assess the complete assembly: stainless grade and section, fasteners, liner, cable arrangement, short-circuit duty, support spacing, mounting structure, galvanic interfaces and exposure zone. Material designation alone is insufficient.
Typical or indicative value
Salt-spray hours, service-life language and spacing values are screening information until supported by the offered configuration and project requirements.
