A pipe clamp installation is only finished when it is verified and recorded — not when the last bolt is tight. Commissioning is the structured walk-down that confirms every clamp matches the design, is correctly mounted and torqued, and is documented for handover. This is a checklist, not an essay: work through it in order, apply the pass criteria, and capture the record.

Commissioning confirms five things before handover: specification match (series, size, insert), mounting integrity (sound base, correct hardware grade), torque (set to value and paint-marked), layout (spacing and segregation per design), and documentation (clamp record and as-installed package complete). Work the walk-down in sequence, apply explicit pass criteria, and produce a signed record. A torque mark on every bolt is the cheapest and most useful single QA step.

§ 01 Before You Start — Pre-Checks

Do not begin the walk-down until these are in hand:

  • Approved clamp schedule / bill of materials with series, size and insert per circuit
  • The torque table for the clamp series and bolt grade used
  • Material certificates (e.g. EN 10204 3.1) for offshore / certified scopes
  • Safe access to every clamp position, and a calibrated torque wrench
  • Paint marker for torque marking, and the clamp condition record sheet

§ 02 The Walk-Down Sequence

Work zone by zone — nacelle, then tower, then offshore/base — so nothing is missed. For each clamp, in order:

  1. Identify — confirm clamp series, size and insert match the schedule for that circuit
  2. Mounting — confirm the base (weld plate / rail / tap plate) is sound and the hardware grade matches the zone
  3. Torque — verify each bolt to the specified value with the calibrated wrench
  4. Mark — apply a paint line across bolt head, nut and body once torqued
  5. Layout — check spacing and that power / fibre / hydraulic lines are segregated per design
  6. Record — log clamp ID, torque, insert and condition on the record sheet
Mark every bolt — A paint line across head, nut and clamp body proves the bolt was torqued and instantly flags later rotation. It is the single cheapest quality-assurance step in the whole installation — never skip it.

§ 03 Sign-Off Criteria

Each clamp passes only if it meets every criterion. Anything that fails becomes a hold point (§05).

§ 04 Handover Documentation

The commissioning output is a record, not just a clean install. Capture for the handover package:

  • As-installed clamp schedule — what was actually fitted, by position
  • Torque record — values applied, wrench calibration reference, date
  • Material certificates — traceability for certified / offshore scopes
  • Photo record — torque marks and representative positions per zone
  • Punch / hold-point list — any outstanding items and their close-out

For projects requiring a formal pack, align this with the clamp documentation package so commissioning records slot straight into the turbine handover.

§ 05 Common Hold Points

The failures that most often stop a sign-off:

  • Wrong insert compound for the fluid — caught here means a return visit; see insert selection
  • Unmarked or under-torqued bolts — no way to prove they were set
  • Field-welded base on coated structure not re-coated — a corrosion hold point offshore
  • Spacing too wide on vibration-prone runs — re-check spacing
  • Missing material certificates on a certified scope — documentation gap, not a hardware fault, but still blocks handover

Evidence and decision boundary

Direct evidence
ISO 4413 addresses hydraulic-system safety and ISO 12100 risk assessment. DIN 3015 identifies clamp families; manufacturer guidance highlights diameter, series, material, bolt, base and spacing checks.
Engineering inference
Handover should preserve traceability from line list and drawings to clamp code, mounting hardware, torque record, inspection result and approved deviations. Safety-critical omissions require closure before release.
Typical or indicative value
Checklist frequencies and sample sizes are typical project controls, not universal standard requirements. The project ITP and risk classification govern.
